Putin gives greenlight to complete liquidation of Russia’s chemical weapon stocks in 'historical' move

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced from Moscow on Wednesday that Russia has completed the disposal mission of its chemical weapons stockpiles.



Within the teleconference bridge with the Russian chemical weapons disposal plant near the village of Kizner, Udmurtia, in the Urals, Putin launched an order to liquidate the last batch of Russian chemical weapons, wiping out the remaining chemical agents.

Among those who took part in the teleconference bridge and were on site at the Russian chemical weapons disposal plant near Kizner village were Mikhail Babich, chairman of the State Commission for Chemical Weapons, Valery Kapashin, the head of the Federal Directorate for Safe Storage and Destruction of Chemical Weapons at the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Hamid Ali Rao, the deputy director of the Organisation's for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons technical secretariat.

Before launching the order, Putin deemed the chemical weapons stocks' elimination a "historical" event.

According to data released by the Kremlin Press Service, the whole Russian chemical weapons arsenal amounting to 39, 967 tonnes was been destructed by September 27. Hence, Russia has fully complied with the obligations, established by the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction.
